31 Mar Barchie
Barchiel Map copy
We are happy to inform you that Barchiel has found a rescue that will find him a happy forever home. Sioux Empire Pit Rescue is an all volunteer 501C3 rescue group in Sioux Falls South Dakota. Sioux Empire’s mission is to promote responsible Pit Bull ownership, provide breed education, combat pet overpopulation, and find qualified homes for sound Pit Bull dogs in South Dakota.
Barchiel will be traveling from Edinburg, Texas all the way up to Sioux, South Dakota. This little guy is moving up state! Joy Benson has directed the transport operation for Barchiel. He will travel by car. Eight people are involved in a seven-state transport for him.
We are still asking for your help to cover the costs. So far, the online fundraiser has lost momentum and we are asking for your help to make this happen.  Find it in your hearts to give a little for dear Barchiel. This has been a long journey towards a happy ending for our now happy little friend!
So far, you have helped raise $696 for Barchiel. We still need $1,500 to cover all the miles he has to travel and medical expenses. Please give kindly. He still has a long way to go to a happy ending.

Gordon Shell, The Dog Fighter

10 Oct

Hand4Paws really appreciates the work being done by Gordon Shell, MMA fighter turned fighter to help dogs. His documentary, The Dog Fighter, is scheduled to be released next month, and this great film needs more exposure.   We are asking our friends who care about dogs to please contact CNN and Ellen DeGeneres, asking if they would interview Gordon Shell.

Gordon Shell’s story was shared on the iReport site for CNN. Although it has over 1,000 views and recommendations, it was never chosen to be aired.

You’ll see what we mean when you read more about Gordon Shell and watch the trailer for The Dog Fighter:  http://www.examiner.com/article/mma-fighter-gordon-shell-begins-a-new-fight-saving-detroit-s-dogs

Would you please help Gordon Shell (and dogs everywhere!) by sending an email to CNN and Ellen via their online contact forms:

CNN story ideas:  http://www.cnn.com/feedback/forms/form11e.html

CNN Anderson Cooper:  http://www.cnn.com/feedback/forms/form5.html?10

Ellen DeGeneres:   http://www.ellentv.com/be-on-the-show/10/

Thank you, and please share this!  When we work together, we can do amazing things!!

Here is a sample letter:

Please consider interviewing Gordon Shell.  His documentary The Dog Fighter is scheduled to be released in November 2012.

The Dog Fighter is the inspiring true story of mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Gordon Shell. When a medical condition threatened to end his career as a fighter, Shell didn’t back down, but continued to fight. This time, however, the fight was for a different cause: the homeless and abused dogs of Detroit. The documentary covers the transition Shell made from MMA fighter to The Dog Fighter. Shell states “I started pushing harder since I’m a fighter and work with fighters. I think we have a bigger voice to go after the bad guys.”

His is a great human interest story.  So many people are interested in the things Gordon Shell is doing for all animals.  When his story was published in the online article below, it went viral. Although his documentary depicts what happens in Detroit, it portrays the reality of many cities across the United States as well as the whole world. He is a great human being working for a great cause, helping man’s best friend.

He is especially against dog fighting.  In his own words: “I’m fighting. So the dogs don’t have to.”

Please watch the movie trailer in this article: http://www.examiner.com/article/mma-fighter-gordon-shell-begins-a-new-fight-saving-detroit-s-dogs

Thank you for your consideration.

Helping the Dogs in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico

9 Aug

Hand4Paws loves to hear about the great job rescue groups are doing in their endeavor to save animals.  We know there are many wonderful rescue organizations around the globe, and we like to share their stories.

Playa Animal Rescue (PAR) is one such rescue. PAR is a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter located in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.   They are dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating injured and abandoned dogs, and to finding permanent, loving homes for each of them.   Although their primary focus is on dogs, they work with other local and international animal rescue organizations to get help for cats and kittens in need.  They are also dedicated to promoting responsible pet ownership with community outreach and education, as well as promoting spaying and neutering of pets.

If you would like to see dogs that were saved and need adopted and other rescue stories, please check them out and follow them on Facebook. Here is their link.

The following information was shared with us by Pat Faulstich:

Good morning! My name is Pat Faulstich, and I am on the Board of Directors, with Playa Animal Rescue (PAR), in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. We are a fairly new organization (Oct 2011) in an area of the world where animal rescue is very much needed. There are so many sick, starving, abused and homeless animals in this area, and our organization is trying to make a difference.  Anyone that has visited this area can see the need for help.

We currently have 67 dogs in our shelter, along with a few in foster homes. Many have serious medical issue, all of which we are treating. We are a totally No Kill shelter. We receive no funding, and rely totally on the generosity of supporters. We really need to get our word out there, and increase our support.

Our shelter is newly built, with a full time caretaker, and on August 20, 2012, there will also be a full time/live on site Veterinarian.

We have formally applied for our 501C tax exempt status, we are awaiting approval.

Please take a minute to check us out.  Thanks for any help you might offer.

Original post: On June 25 2012, we all woke up hearing the news that four puppies and an adult dog, passed away after their shelter was ravaged by Tropical Storm Debby. According to Jacksonville.com the people responsible for the welfare of the dogs and cats state that “[They] had moved the puppies up to the high end of the shelter, thinking they would be safe there.” ”We all feel so bad … We never expected the creek would rise this fast and this high and we really felt the ditches would handle it if it came out of the bank.” explained Capt. Carol Starling of the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office, who oversees the animal shelter.

The reporter Teresa Stepzinski informs that the  bull dog/hound mix puppies that died were part of a large litter recently brought to the shelter along with their mother. The animals were waiting to be picked up by a rescue group, when they were caught in the flood. The surviving animals, about 60 dogs, cats and kittens immediately were evacuated to safety on higher ground at the county fairgrounds by sheriff’s deputies and animal control personnel.

On the social networking site Facebook for SAVING THE DOGS & CATS OF PUTNAM COUNTY, FLORIDA  a picture of the shelter has been posted and caring people have offered their help the shelter that is in need of all of us right now. They posted the following list of things that would be greatly appreciated if they could be donated.

  • Old Crates & Kennels
  • Zip ties (if you have worked in a rescue mission you know how important and essential zip ties are)
  • Scrub brooms/Brushes
  • Bleach
  • Paper Towels
  • Plastic Spray bottles
  • Electric fans and extension cords (Heat and humidity are very high in this area)
Financial donations can be called in to Supporters of Shelter Animals to Tracy George at (904)796-0382
Send your tax deductible contribution to “Supporters of Sheltered Animals, Inc.” 1228 Blanding St. Starke, FL 332091 That is the non-profit rescue group that works directly with this shelter.
Just a few hours ago a new Facebook update was posted by the rescue:
“PLEA from AC in Green Cove Springs to all area RESCUES and ADOPTERS: County residents forced to evacuate by rising floodwaters are dropping off pets BY THE DOZENS at the shelter. The local no-kill shelter DID have to be evacuated, and all their animals had to be relocated to AC too. THE POUND IS SLAMMED and BEGGING for adopters and rescues to pull NOW”
Please consider giving a hand to the animals during this time of need. If you have never volunteered before and you always had the urge to do something for animals…NOW IT IS THE TIME. Rescues are always looking for eager people with a good heart that can truly help out. Be sincere and do what your heart tells you. Do not think that there could be enough people to help, there could never be more than enough people to help animals. If you can donate money, do so. Donate money that goes directly to them and to the animals. Please, it takes a second to share the following post, remember that sharing is caring. We have to care for these animals that need of your compassion and help right now. Please do so.

Giving Rescues a voice! Guest Blogging Spot for Registered Animal Rescues!

The following is a guest blog posting from a registered rescue in the state of Missouri. They are in great need of a van in order to transport animals to adoption clinics. Due to the lack of a proper transportation vehicle, many of the adoptable dogs stay behind at the shelter and do not get a chance at adoption until the next clinic. Please take a moment to read and get to know the work of Pawsibilities are Endless. Please remember, small donations add up in a tremendous way. Even if you can’t help financially, you can lend a hand by sharing ~HAND4PAWS

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ADDING HAND4PAWS LINK TO YOUR NEWSLETTER! IT IS AN HONOR FOR US TO BE INCLUDED! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOU DO!

Thank you’s and news

-This awesome BLOG is featuring our need for a van or mini van for our rescue. Thanks to Hands4Paws!

-Please remember it is mosquito season and it only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to infect your dog with heartworms. Please be diligent and use a heartworm preventative. I was hanging out the back yard with Linda and they were swarming the poor baby.

-Colorado Animal Rescue Express: C.A.R.E. was one of Pawsibilities’ very first supporters. For the first 6 months or so Pawsibilities was active we were almost entirely on our own. We remember sending an email out, not even asking for help but because we were SO excited that Angel, a white pit bull was getting adopted from the Wind- sor, Mo pound. Lisa from C.A.R.E. offered to pay for her vetting; we were ecstatic. At that time Pawsibilities was the only group helping the Windsor Pound and we were very grateful to have someone else step in. From that point on Colorado Animal Rescue Express and their Jake’s Fund have helped numerous Windsor Pound dogs and Pawsibilities Are Endless dogs, even assisting us with many of our high cost medical supply orders. However, this last one “took the cake.”

We had contacted Lisa at Colorado Animal Rescue Express letting her know Pawsibilities would be donating many of our 5 ways to the Windsor Pound and asking her if Jake’s Fund would be able to help us with another purchase of these extremely vital vaccines; they not only offered to pay for an entire 25 count box for us, but also offered to buy a box for the Windsor Pound through our order. Wow! We placed the order, adding on some additional items the rescue needed- to save on shipping- knowing Colorado Animal Rescue Express would reimburse us for the 5way vaccines and Pawsibilities Are Endless would pay for the additional supplies.

When we placed the order and we submitted the receipt to Lisa, Colorado Animal Rescue Express sent us a check for the entire, almost $300 purchase! This included enough frontline to last our entire rescue the whole summer! (usually a $75 per month cost for us) we couldn’t believe it; that was so unexpected and we are very grateful! we immediately got on Facebook and asked everyone to go to Caretransport.org to thank Lisa, Linda and C.A.R.E.’s Jake’s Fund for their support of our rescue efforts. If you support Pawsibilities Are Endless, please do the same. This group deserves our gratitude. Thank you, C.A.R.E!

-Our weekday adoption events will be on June: 8th and 13th from 3-7pm and the 15th from 5-7pm at the Petco in Blue Springs, MO.

-Pawsibilities Are Endless accept paypal donations at: Pawsibilities@ymail.com. Thank you Marisa Julien for your paypal donation in May.

-Pawsibilities Are Endless was turned down for a much needed grant we had applied for so this chip in is more important to us now than it has ever been, please help share this link: http://bit.ly/HUAzaX

-Thank you, Kim Henderson from 1st Community bank in Windsor for donating aluminum cans to help us raise funds!

-Yet another simple way to raise funds for Pawsibilities: http://www.goodsearch.com/nonprofit/ pawsibilities.aspx

-Thank you, Lisa D for donating items from our Amazon.com wish list:
-Pawsibilities has our own iGive link! Earn money for us while you shop!http://www.iGive.com/Pawsibilities-MO
The same day we set up this link, our adoption coordinator was book- ing a room with Choice Hotels and a message popped up showing the amount that would come to the rescue. We have high hopes for this program.

Dolores speaks about animal cruelty in South Africa (Petition link included)

5 Jun yKjkYrVJMhGiYfy-320x240-cropped

Outrages acts of animal cruelty in South Africa.

It is time that the South African Government stops sticking its head in the sand and stamps out the injustice being done to animals. Stupidity and ignorance on the part of the government is not acceptable.
Yes there is a very large population of under educated South Africans but does that give them the right to torture animals just to do it? The people whether poor or uneducated are just randomly torturing for fun. This is horrendous and they need to be punished. They are taking a life of an animal that has done nothing but try to co-exist in a State that is poverty stricken. Why allow this torture to continue?
If these random acts of abuse and cruelty continue it will manifest to the next generation and so on. These tortures are unnecessary and cruel and without any consequence to the people doing these acts it will never stop. Poverty and lack of a good education is a poor excuse for the South African Government to allow such atrocities to continue.
The South African Government needs to be held accountable for these acts of violence. They need to charge these people, no matter where they live with a fine and possibly incarceration. If this was done maybe after a few fines were levied the abusers would realize that the deed does not justify the added burden and stress on their families.
Being underprivileged or undereducated is not an excuse. Laws need to be put into place now. The longer the South African Government turns its head and looks away from these abusers the more abusers will pop up and continue to torture, maim and kill the animals. Every day that the government does nothing, more animals are horribly tortured; some for pure fun, some because there is nothing else to do, some just because they can. How sad is that?
The United States has many organizations going to Africa to help the people, why can’t the South African justice system step up to the plate and try to implement today a law to help these innocent animals?
It is time to do something. Wake up and do what it right. Stop the animal abuse in South Africa. It starts with your justice system, do the right thing and do something now. Break the cycle.

Dolores speaks about puppy mills

5 Jun puppy-milll-bill-image-ii

Puppy mills are a breeding factory, mills are a more politically polite word to use. It is a factory where dogs are kept in cramped, locked cages with the soul purpose of pumping out puppies. Female dogs are usually bred 2 times a year. At that rate, they usually burn out by age 5 and at that time they are put to death. These breeder dogs never feel the tender touch of a hand, the love of a person, or have any human contact. Their soul existence is to breed and breed again. They have never been walked, never even treated like a dog, rather a piece of flesh that makes a ton of money for the owner of the mill/factory. Puppy millers can make more than $300,000 each year by GROWING puppies. Note the word growing!
About 1 million breeder dogs are confined in puppy mills throughout the country. These puppies are sold to pet stores all over the country. Did you know that 99% of all puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills and that 100% of these puppies have parasites when bought. 500,000 puppies are born in puppy mills and sold in pet stores every year in the United States. In America alone there are over 35,000 pet stores .
Puppy mills have been around since the 1960’s, It’s time to close them all. It’s time to breed dogs properly, or better still ADOPT don’t shop.
Puppy mills should be outlawed everywhere. They are cruel, inhumane and a disgusting way to make a ton of money off of a dog. We the public need to realize where the cute puppies that you see in the pet stores are coming from. We the public need to stop buying from pet stores and make everywhere aware about the evil things that occur at a puppy mill.

ADOPT, CLOSE DOWN THE PUPPY MILLS

petMD.com Lists the Top 10 Warning Signs of Cancer in Dogs and Cats

22 May dog-at-vet-1337010402

MIAMI, May 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – May is Pet Cancer Awareness Month, a time to spread awareness of the symptoms of cancer in dogs and cats. As cancer is the leading cause of death in cats and dogs, knowing the symptoms your pets may present if they develop the disease can help you and your vet diagnose and treat your pet sooner. Therefore, petMD.com has pulled together the top 10 warning signs of cancer in dogs and cats.

1. Lumps and Bumps: Not every lump or bump is necessarily cancerous, but consulting with your vet is the only way to be sure. If the lump is growing or not resolving itself, contact your vet and he or she will do a biopsy to determine the contents of the bump.

2. Abnormal Odors: Foul odors from any of your cat or dog’s orifices and/or body parts may be a cause for concern. Cancers of the mouth, nose, or anal regions can cause your pet to emit offensive odors.

3. Abnormal Discharges: Discharges such as blood, pus, vomit, diarrhea, and any other abnormal substance being excreted from your pet’s body should be checked out by a veterinarian immediately. A bloated or distended stomach could also be a sign of internal discharge.

4. Non-Healing Wounds: Lacerations or sores that do not heal within a normal time range on the surface of your cat or dog’s body may indicate infection, skin disease, and possibly cancer.

5. Weight Loss: Sudden weight loss in cats and dogs not on a diet can be an indicator of many diseases and illnesses. If coupled with another warning sign of cancer, you should contact your vet right away and inform him or her about your pet’s symptoms.

6. Change in Appetite: While a lack of appetite in dogs and cats can be an indicator of many things, they never stop eating without a cause. Not necessarily a sign of cancer, a decrease in appetite can indicate an oral tumor, which would make it painful and difficult for your pet to eat and swallow.

7. Coughing or Difficulty Breathing: Although symptoms of heart and lung disease, coughing and abnormal breathing can also indicate cancer. This symptom will most likely occur if the cancer in your pet’s body has metastasized into his or her lungs.

8. Lethargy and Depression: If your pet has cancer, there is a chance that he or she will suffer from depression and sleep more, become less playful, and be less willing to go for walks. Although lethargy or depression in dogs and cats can set in with any illness, it is commonly seen in pets that have cancer.

9. Changes in Bathroom Habits: Any changes in your pet’s bathroom habits including difficulty using the bathroom, frequent bathroom use, and blood in urine or stools are potential warning signs that cancer has developed in your pet.

10. Evidence of Pain: Limping or other evidence of your dog or cat in pain when he or she is active, or if the pain is too great for them to be active, can be indications of cancer of the bone.

While no one sign purely indicates cancer, a cat or dog displaying two or more of these symptoms should be taken to the veterinarian for an exam so that he or she can be properly diagnosed and treated accordingly.

Hand4Paws,
Thank you for offering to help our rescue with our fundraising and van needs.
Pawsibilities Are Endless is a small rescue in rural, Missouri; we’re 2 hours from Kansas City. We originally established the rescue to help specifically the Windsor, Missouri pound, but have now expanded to assist the Clinton and Warrensburg, Mo shelters and individuals as well, although we are still small. At this time we assist 50-100 dogs per year maximum.
We use several different vets depending on our dog’s needs, all are 45 minutes to an hour and a half away, however, our two vehicles used for transporting are a truck and a compact car, so the maximum amount of dogs we can transport at one given time is 4 and that’s if we have small dogs (we mostly help medium to large dogs) and if there isn’t a lot of equipment we need to transport. (kennels, tables, chairs for pet fairs, etc)
An example of the problems we run into just happened yesterday; I had 4 large dogs to take to the vet but there isn’t enough room in the vehicle for all of them, so I’ll be making 2-3 trips to get them all vetted, all 45 minutes away, an hour and a half round trip; 3 of the dogs now can’t go to the vet until next week.
Another example is, when we pulled 3 dogs from the Warrensburg shelter I didn’t have enough room in my vehicle for all of them so had to make 2 separate trips on 2 separate days, also a 45 minute one way trip, an hour and a half round trip.
The added travel time of course costs us financially, but also takes me away from other important rescue duties; imagine what I could get done with those extra days.
Because of our location, we travel 2-3 times per month, 3 hours round trip to Blue Springs for pet fairs at the Petco in the car or truck, leaving behind adoptable dogs just because we can’t fit them in the vehicle.
We are 501c3 and would love to have a cargo style van, suv or minivan donated to the rescue so we could take more dogs on each trip, saving in gas for vet runs and getting more adoptable dogs to pet fairs.

The second thing we are trying to do is pay off our rescue expenses. Right now we are doing fundraisers to try to come up with $2100, most of which was spent on medical expenses. We’ve spent $1200 in the past month and a half at one vet’s office for 3 different dogs.

Our contact information is below.
