Hand4Paws really appreciates the work being done by Gordon Shell, MMA fighter turned fighter to help dogs. His documentary, The Dog Fighter, is scheduled to be released next month, and this great film needs more exposure. We are asking our friends who care about dogs to please contact CNN and Ellen DeGeneres, asking if they would interview Gordon Shell.
Gordon Shell’s story was shared on the iReport site for CNN. Although it has over 1,000 views and recommendations, it was never chosen to be aired.
You’ll see what we mean when you read more about Gordon Shell and watch the trailer for The Dog Fighter: http://www.examiner.com/article/mma-fighter-gordon-shell-begins-a-new-fight-saving-detroit-s-dogs

Please consider interviewing Gordon Shell. His documentary The Dog Fighter is scheduled to be released in November 2012.
The Dog Fighter is the inspiring true story of mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Gordon Shell. When a medical condition threatened to end his career as a fighter, Shell didn’t back down, but continued to fight. This time, however, the fight was for a different cause: the homeless and abused dogs of Detroit. The documentary covers the transition Shell made from MMA fighter to The Dog Fighter. Shell states “I started pushing harder since I’m a fighter and work with fighters. I think we have a bigger voice to go after the bad guys.”
His is a great human interest story. So many people are interested in the things Gordon Shell is doing for all animals. When his story was published in the online article below, it went viral. Although his documentary depicts what happens in Detroit, it portrays the reality of many cities across the United States as well as the whole world. He is a great human being working for a great cause, helping man’s best friend.
He is especially against dog fighting. In his own words: “I’m fighting. So the dogs don’t have to.”

Thank you for your consideration.
Hand4Paws loves to hear about the great job rescue groups are doing in their endeavor to save animals. We know there are many wonderful rescue organizations around the globe, and we like to share their stories.
Playa Animal Rescue (PAR) is one such rescue. PAR is a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter located in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. They are dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating injured and abandoned dogs, and to finding permanent, loving homes for each of them. Although their primary focus is on dogs, they work with other local and international animal rescue organizations to get help for cats and kittens in need. They are also dedicated to promoting responsible pet ownership with community outreach and education, as well as promoting spaying and neutering of pets.
If you would like to see dogs that were saved and need adopted and other rescue stories, please check them out and follow them on Facebook. Here is their link.
The following information was shared with us by Pat Faulstich:
Good morning! My name is Pat Faulstich, and I am on the Board of Directors, with Playa Animal Rescue (PAR), in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. We are a fairly new organization (Oct 2011) in an area of the world where animal rescue is very much needed. There are so many sick, starving, abused and homeless animals in this area, and our organization is trying to make a difference. Anyone that has visited this area can see the need for help.
We currently have 67 dogs in our shelter, along with a few in foster homes. Many have serious medical issue, all of which we are treating. We are a totally No Kill shelter. We receive no funding, and rely totally on the generosity of supporters. We really need to get our word out there, and increase our support.
Our shelter is newly built, with a full time caretaker, and on August 20, 2012, there will also be a full time/live on site Veterinarian.
We have formally applied for our 501C tax exempt status, we are awaiting approval.
Please take a minute to check us out. Thanks for any help you might offer.

Puppy mills are a breeding factory, mills are a more politically polite word to use. It is a factory where dogs are kept in cramped, locked cages with the soul purpose of pumping out puppies. Female dogs are usually bred 2 times a year. At that rate, they usually burn out by age 5 and at that time they are put to death. These breeder dogs never feel the tender touch of a hand, the love of a person, or have any human contact. Their soul existence is to breed and breed again. They have never been walked, never even treated like a dog, rather a piece of flesh that makes a ton of money for the owner of the mill/factory. Puppy millers can make more than $300,000 each year by GROWING puppies. Note the word growing!
About 1 million breeder dogs are confined in puppy mills throughout the country. These puppies are sold to pet stores all over the country. Did you know that 99% of all puppies sold in pet stores come from puppy mills and that 100% of these puppies have parasites when bought. 500,000 puppies are born in puppy mills and sold in pet stores every year in the United States. In America alone there are over 35,000 pet stores .
Puppy mills have been around since the 1960’s, It’s time to close them all. It’s time to breed dogs properly, or better still ADOPT don’t shop.
Puppy mills should be outlawed everywhere. They are cruel, inhumane and a disgusting way to make a ton of money off of a dog. We the public need to realize where the cute puppies that you see in the pet stores are coming from. We the public need to stop buying from pet stores and make everywhere aware about the evil things that occur at a puppy mill.
ADOPT, CLOSE DOWN THE PUPPY MILLS

MIAMI, May 21, 2012 /PRNewswire/ – May is Pet Cancer Awareness Month, a time to spread awareness of the symptoms of cancer in dogs and cats. As cancer is the leading cause of death in cats and dogs, knowing the symptoms your pets may present if they develop the disease can help you and your vet diagnose and treat your pet sooner. Therefore, petMD.com has pulled together the top 10 warning signs of cancer in dogs and cats.
1. Lumps and Bumps: Not every lump or bump is necessarily cancerous, but consulting with your vet is the only way to be sure. If the lump is growing or not resolving itself, contact your vet and he or she will do a biopsy to determine the contents of the bump.
2. Abnormal Odors: Foul odors from any of your cat or dog’s orifices and/or body parts may be a cause for concern. Cancers of the mouth, nose, or anal regions can cause your pet to emit offensive odors.
3. Abnormal Discharges: Discharges such as blood, pus, vomit, diarrhea, and any other abnormal substance being excreted from your pet’s body should be checked out by a veterinarian immediately. A bloated or distended stomach could also be a sign of internal discharge.
4. Non-Healing Wounds: Lacerations or sores that do not heal within a normal time range on the surface of your cat or dog’s body may indicate infection, skin disease, and possibly cancer.
5. Weight Loss: Sudden weight loss in cats and dogs not on a diet can be an indicator of many diseases and illnesses. If coupled with another warning sign of cancer, you should contact your vet right away and inform him or her about your pet’s symptoms.
6. Change in Appetite: While a lack of appetite in dogs and cats can be an indicator of many things, they never stop eating without a cause. Not necessarily a sign of cancer, a decrease in appetite can indicate an oral tumor, which would make it painful and difficult for your pet to eat and swallow.
7. Coughing or Difficulty Breathing: Although symptoms of heart and lung disease, coughing and abnormal breathing can also indicate cancer. This symptom will most likely occur if the cancer in your pet’s body has metastasized into his or her lungs.
8. Lethargy and Depression: If your pet has cancer, there is a chance that he or she will suffer from depression and sleep more, become less playful, and be less willing to go for walks. Although lethargy or depression in dogs and cats can set in with any illness, it is commonly seen in pets that have cancer.
9. Changes in Bathroom Habits: Any changes in your pet’s bathroom habits including difficulty using the bathroom, frequent bathroom use, and blood in urine or stools are potential warning signs that cancer has developed in your pet.
10. Evidence of Pain: Limping or other evidence of your dog or cat in pain when he or she is active, or if the pain is too great for them to be active, can be indications of cancer of the bone.
While no one sign purely indicates cancer, a cat or dog displaying two or more of these symptoms should be taken to the veterinarian for an exam so that he or she can be properly diagnosed and treated accordingly.
