LAGUNA BEACH, CA–(Marketwire – February 5, 2012) – The Laguna Beach Animal Hospital, headed by veterinarian Dr. James A. Levin is supporting the mission of a Laguna animal rescue group called Animal Crackers. The veterinary hospital provides discounted services to the animals rescued by the group, including vaccines, surgery and preventative medical care. They also help Animal Crackers to find new homes for as many rescued pets as possible through their email contacts, and by posting announcements about animals that need to be adopted on their Facebook page. Dr. Levin and his fellow veterinarians say they are eager to inform everyone in the area about the work done by Animal Crackers volunteers to rescue abandoned, abused and neglected animals and help as many of these animals find happy homes as possible.
According to Dr. Levin, the need to inform potential pet owners of rescued animals is significant.
“Gina and the folks at Animal Crackers have been doing an enormous labor of love for these neglected and often abused and abandoned animals for over 20 years now and it constantly amazes me how much they do, often with very few resources, to get proper care for these cats and dogs and to find them forever homes,” Levin said. “It’s hard work, so when they approached us for help, we just couldn’t turn them down. Our Laguna vet office helps with necessary medical care for these animals, and we also do whatever we can to inform people about animals that need a safe, loving family to adopt them. We really love working with Animal Crackers and, of course, the animals themselves.”
The Laguna Beach vet also stresses the importance of having animals spayed or neutered to reduce the staggering population of stray and abandoned animals in the area. According to Orange County animal shelter statistics, more than 5,000 stray dogs and cats are euthanized each year due to overpopulation. The Animal Crackers website states that, on average, they are able to rescue and place around 280 dogs and 80 cats in new homes every year. Dr. Levin points out that this just underscores how hard it is to keep up with the statistical need for help at local animal rescue organizations.
Veterinarian Dr. Hays Fyke, who just recently joined the veterinary team at the animal hospital, says that he was impressed by how much his fellow veterinarians were involved with Animal Crackers and other local animal rescue organizations.
“This is a great team of dedicated, experienced veterinarians and animal lovers, and I am glad I came to work with them,” Levin said. “I am also impressed by how they use social media to spread the word about spaying and neutering as well as letting people know about the dogs and cats that need good homes.”
The veterinary clinic’s Facebook page contains periodic updates about cats and dogs rescued by Animal Crackers.
