New update on Barchiel! Formerly known as “dog living on a mattress”

15 Mar

$(KGrHqNHJEwE-uwKHetMBPt!oF(t(Q~~60_35

Remember the posting about the pup living on a mattress? It has been a few weeks since I first saw Barchiel on an empty lot in Pharr Texas. My friend Joyce Fields, was there to help me out getting the word out on Barchiel. She had the time and patience for me to explain her all that had happened in one single day and explained to her my intentions to have the dog rescued. If you did not read the first article by Joy you can read it by clicking here: Stray dog living on a mattress needs help.

Since then, many things happened once he was picked up by animal control. My friend Joy Benson has been with me from the start and she did not give up on Barchiel till he was picked up. The Animal Control of the City of Pharr Texas were helpful in telling us that he had been picked up and sent to Palm Valley Animal Center. The bad news that we did not know was that the animal shelter has a policy on not placing any pit mixes available for adoption. Being so close to the border with Mexico there is always the chance of the dogs ending up in dog fighting rings. Joyce Fields wrote another article asking for people to help him out.If you missed it you can read it by clicking here: Update on stray dog living on a mattress

Joy and I called to the animal shelter in order to talk to them. I have to thank to all the kind people that picked up our calls. Thank you for your kindness and listening to us. At the end of the 3 days of hold…we received news that Barchiel would not be put to sleep. He would be placed on hold till he found a rescue to take him in. He got his first vaccines and he got tested for Heartworm…unfortunately he did test positive for heartworm.

The shelter asked that in order for Barchiel to be placed in a rescue it has to be a registered rescue. There is limited transport…He has a ride to San Antonio, Houston or Austin at the moment. The treatment for his heartworm and he still needs to be fixed. Joy Benson, Joyce Fields and I decided to start online fundraising. So far we are close to $500! Thanks to great people that have donated and want to help Barchiel. What he needs now is to find a rescue that will be willing to give him a chance and give him a vacant place in rescue. He is a good boy, very timid, but he does not respond aggressively when people show him affection or touch him while he eats. He is getting socialized at Palm Valley Animal Shelter.

This are some of his details:

age: two yeas of age
sex:male
color: tan / white
The following is the description given by the animal shelter:

He is just about 2yrs old, HW+, and weighs 62lbs. He is now tested and vaccinated. He is a little timid but not aggressive.

He takes food just fine in a bowl and shows no food aggression when adding more to his bowl, or taking away. He loves to be loved on.

He likes neck rubs and is staying close on his little rug. If you can help pull him to a rescue organization (501c3) OUTSIDE OF THE RGV

If you can help this sweetheart that has no fault for being abandoned and left to fend for himself, please contact us! We are here to help!

All rescues that send a message will be vetted by us in order to find Barchiel an appropriate home.

We have named him Barchiel…it means angel of compassion. We have all being guided by compassion to help out this little guy

If you read this posting…I pray you can help him out. Please share his story.

There is always room for one..I see by his coat he must be a stray,
The untidy look gives him away.
He’s lost his will and is so thin,
Hasn’t eaten since God knows when.
I know as I coax him through the door,
There’s always room for one more.
The other night in the freezing rain,
That little female came again.
Matted and soaked, crying in need,
Lost and alone with babies to feed.
Her pleading eyes I couldn’t ignore,
There’s always room for one more.

There’s a new face on the docks today,
Hungry but clean, to our dismay,
I stroked her head, her body rippled,
When she got up I saw she was crippled.
She started to go, but fell on the floor.
There’s always room for one more.

There’s the poor doggy standing in the rain,
I’ve tried to entice him time and again.
One ear is lopsided, the other’s been torn,
Blind in one eye, lost and forlorn.
He’s coming now, so I’ll open the door.
There’s always room for one more.

Helping the Dogs in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico

9 Aug

Hand4Paws loves to hear about the great job rescue groups are doing in their endeavor to save animals.  We know there are many wonderful rescue organizations around the globe, and we like to share their stories.

Playa Animal Rescue (PAR) is one such rescue. PAR is a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter located in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.   They are dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating injured and abandoned dogs, and to finding permanent, loving homes for each of them.   Although their primary focus is on dogs, they work with other local and international animal rescue organizations to get help for cats and kittens in need.  They are also dedicated to promoting responsible pet ownership with community outreach and education, as well as promoting spaying and neutering of pets.

If you would like to see dogs that were saved and need adopted and other rescue stories, please check them out and follow them on Facebook. Here is their link.

The following information was shared with us by Pat Faulstich:

Good morning! My name is Pat Faulstich, and I am on the Board of Directors, with Playa Animal Rescue (PAR), in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. We are a fairly new organization (Oct 2011) in an area of the world where animal rescue is very much needed. There are so many sick, starving, abused and homeless animals in this area, and our organization is trying to make a difference.  Anyone that has visited this area can see the need for help.

We currently have 67 dogs in our shelter, along with a few in foster homes. Many have serious medical issue, all of which we are treating. We are a totally No Kill shelter. We receive no funding, and rely totally on the generosity of supporters. We really need to get our word out there, and increase our support.

Our shelter is newly built, with a full time caretaker, and on August 20, 2012, there will also be a full time/live on site Veterinarian.

We have formally applied for our 501C tax exempt status, we are awaiting approval.

Please take a minute to check us out.  Thanks for any help you might offer.

Original post: On June 25 2012, we all woke up hearing the news that four puppies and an adult dog, passed away after their shelter was ravaged by Tropical Storm Debby. According to Jacksonville.com the people responsible for the welfare of the dogs and cats state that “[They] had moved the puppies up to the high end of the shelter, thinking they would be safe there.” “We all feel so bad … We never expected the creek would rise this fast and this high and we really felt the ditches would handle it if it came out of the bank.” explained Capt. Carol Starling of the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office, who oversees the animal shelter.

The reporter Teresa Stepzinski informs that the  bull dog/hound mix puppies that died were part of a large litter recently brought to the shelter along with their mother. The animals were waiting to be picked up by a rescue group, when they were caught in the flood. The surviving animals, about 60 dogs, cats and kittens immediately were evacuated to safety on higher ground at the county fairgrounds by sheriff’s deputies and animal control personnel.

On the social networking site Facebook for SAVING THE DOGS & CATS OF PUTNAM COUNTY, FLORIDA  a picture of the shelter has been posted and caring people have offered their help the shelter that is in need of all of us right now. They posted the following list of things that would be greatly appreciated if they could be donated.

  • Old Crates & Kennels
  • Zip ties (if you have worked in a rescue mission you know how important and essential zip ties are)
  • Scrub brooms/Brushes
  • Bleach
  • Paper Towels
  • Plastic Spray bottles
  • Electric fans and extension cords (Heat and humidity are very high in this area)
Financial donations can be called in to Supporters of Shelter Animals to Tracy George at (904)796-0382
Send your tax deductible contribution to “Supporters of Sheltered Animals, Inc.” 1228 Blanding St. Starke, FL 332091 That is the non-profit rescue group that works directly with this shelter.
Just a few hours ago a new Facebook update was posted by the rescue:
“PLEA from AC in Green Cove Springs to all area RESCUES and ADOPTERS: County residents forced to evacuate by rising floodwaters are dropping off pets BY THE DOZENS at the shelter. The local no-kill shelter DID have to be evacuated, and all their animals had to be relocated to AC too. THE POUND IS SLAMMED and BEGGING for adopters and rescues to pull NOW”
Please consider giving a hand to the animals during this time of need. If you have never volunteered before and you always had the urge to do something for animals…NOW IT IS THE TIME. Rescues are always looking for eager people with a good heart that can truly help out. Be sincere and do what your heart tells you. Do not think that there could be enough people to help, there could never be more than enough people to help animals. If you can donate money, do so. Donate money that goes directly to them and to the animals. Please, it takes a second to share the following post, remember that sharing is caring. We have to care for these animals that need of your compassion and help right now. Please do so.

3/11/12:  UPDATE ON: EVERETT PENNSYLVANIA – TWO DOGS NEED RESCUED/NO FOOD/NO WATER/CHAINED & ABUSED!

Hand4Paws received an email from a wonderful woman who drove out to check on the dogs.  Here is what she found:

“When I got there – I managed to take a pic of the only dog I saw… He was in a pen no longer than me & there is so much trash around !!  OMG… anyway when I spoke to the lady she was willing to show me the dogs, but had to get dressed – the grandmother then appeared in the doorway & started screaming saying & I quote “she feeds them 3 times a day & were tired of getting harrassed by these neighbors”!!!

After grandmother when into the house – the idiot came outside & started screaming “who is here & what do they want “!!  I proceeded to tell him who I was & what I wanted – he told me that he was gonna call the state troopers !! I being from Philly told the idiot to call them & if he wanted I had them on speed dial !!  After I called the state troopers – no trooper was in the area… I hung up with them & called the Humaine Society & got a recorded message stating they were closed.

The idiot started demanding that I leave cuz I was trespassing on private property ….There was no posted signs anywhere – guy is full of crap… The woman peered out of the house to show me the dogs & we started walking towards the woods !!!  I’m thinking – Great, I’m gonna see them !!   WRONG !!!   The idiot told me that if I dont leave his property – I was gonna be shot… He demanded that the woman get back into the house.  I said ok…I will be back !!  After that I was on my way home & ran into a state trooper – I flagged him down & proceeded to advise him of everything that transpired that morning…The officer told me to not give up – & to get the “multiple” dogs & kitties outta there !!  (exact words)

The officer also told me to flood the Humane Society by email & phone calls until they act !!”

This caring woman went out of her way to go check on the dogs.  The least we can do is call the Humane Society of Bedford County, asking that they check on – and help – these abused dogs.

Assemblywoman Amy Paulin supports “Quick Kill Bill” TAKE ACTION

2 Mar

http://www.protectnypets.org/

All animals are at risk with the Quick Kill Bill that Amy Paulin supports. This Bill would terminate any hold period at the animal pounds. If a pet by any chance escapes your house, if any stray is picked up by the city…they will be killed upon the criteria of the staff. Most of the animals that end up at the pound are scared and their behavior could be shy or even maybe aggressive due to the stress. This could seal their fate and have them killed.

Please consider sending Assemblywoman Paulin a respectful message stating that the animals deserve a holding period and the city should reach out to no kill rescues to try to have animals placed in permanent homes or foster homes.Although we know that the ASPCA supports the bill, we ask for her common sense and her compassion to take a look at the reality of this Bill and instead of promoting death she does the rational thing to promote education of pet overpopulation and adoption.

You can write to Paulin to her email Paulin@assembly.state.ny.us

SPCA International Emergency Animal Rescue Video Shows Animals Stranded in Deplorable Conditions in Thailand

25 Feb

Animal Rescue Workers Dispatched to Help in Wake of Deadly Flooding

NEW YORK, Feb 23, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) — SPCA International, a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing animal suffering and abuse internationally, has posted a newly shot video showing SPCA International’s Animal Rescue Expert, Terri Crisp, at a facility in Thailand holding approximately 1,000 animals living in deplorable conditions caused by heavy flooding late last year. SPCA International dispatched staff to Thailand earlier this month to assess and respond to the crisis animals are now facing post-flood.

The floods killed hundreds of people and were the worst to hit central Thailand since 1942. Countless animals were killed by the floods, while thousands of others were rescued by animal organizations and good Samaritans. Now their plight continues as shelters work to rebuild. However, some cannot to due to lack of funding or will.

“After natural disasters there are several layers of rescue work that take months or longer,” said Stephanie Scott of SPCA International. “Pulling animals out of the flood water is the first critical step, but there are medical needs, vaccinations, supplies, clean-up and rebuilding efforts that are essential to ensure the animal population is safe and healthy. Many homeless animals were significantly displaced by the flooding, now miles away from what was originally their territory. Others were owned animals that could not be reunited with their caregivers and are now facing a very uncertain future. We hope the news from the video will help raise global awareness and allow us to send more aid to this region.”

SPCA International specializes in assisting animals in areas of conflict and disaster. During times of natural disaster, political turmoil, war and man-made disaster, SPCA International is ready to take action for the protection of animals. Along with partner organizations around the world, they focus on helping in crisis situations where animals are at risk or in danger. Video and news about SPCA International’s work is available on the group’s Web site, http://www.spcai.org .
